Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer is introducing the final edition of its iconic Calibre 12 movement. The brand is retiring its Sellita SW300-1 based movement, which has been a staple in the Monaco lineup since 2009. At the same time, a new chapter opens for Monaco with the Monaco Heuer 02, a timepiece that brings the in-house Heuer 02 movement to the Monaco lineup for the first time ever.

TAG Heuer is launching two new models celebrating the new era of the Monaco. The first is the Monaco Calibre 12 Final Edition, the last Monaco watch to be equipped with the legendary Calibre 12 movement. The second is the Monaco Heuer 2, the first Monaco equipped with the new in-house movement, which has, until now, been reserved for the Carrera watches.

The goodbye edition, TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 Final Edition, is limited to only 1000 pieces worldwide. It features a refreshed design and a sleek, traditional appearance. The last Calibre 12 Monaco model features a crown positioned on the right side of the stainless steel case, and a stunning vertically-brushed ruthenium dial. The black opaline counters at 3 and 9 o’clock complement the color of a classic black alligator leather strap. The central seconds hand, 12 o’clock index, and the tips of the hour and minute hands feature a hint of bold red color, a feature that enhances the dynamic yet elegant design. The latest execution of Hublot’s Classic Fusion gets a colorful twist thanks to the late Carlos Crus-Diez, who passed away this August at the age of 95. Cruz-Diez is well known for his 70-year career exploring the idea that color is circumstantial, rather than a fixed and entirely known quantity. His interpretation is that color is fluid. His work has spanned a multitude of mediums; he’s worked with light installations, paintings, and sculptures. He was a pioneer of the ‘60s Op Art movement that focused on optical illusions, specifically the idea of movement created by a static image. In 1965, he created his first Chronosaturation series, where an observer would progressively walk through different galleries, each with intense fluorescent bulbs in red, green, and blue. The idea was that the pieces of art (or rather, the viewer’s interpretation) in each gallery would be drastically affected by the presence of the light. Moving from one gallery to the next would impart residual light on the observers' eyes that would fade over time, in turn making the works change appearance in the amount of time that observers’ eyes would take to adjust to the new lighting conditions.


The newly introduced Classic Fusion collection plays off these notions of color impermanence and fluidity. On the dial of the Classic Fusion is an interpretation of Cruz-Diez’s work, Chronointerference, from 1964. It consists of two unique discs, both driven independently by the caliber MHUB1100.H. These colored dynamic discs move in conjunction with the time. As time passes, the appearance of the dial completely changes as the pattern shifts. It’s the same concept that Cruz-Diez always played with, except Hublot has managed to translate this idea from a more conventional medium onto the dial of one of their core models. The watch comes in three materials and two sizes: Ceramic, titanium, and King Gold, all in both 38mm and 45 mm case sizes.

Initial Thoughts

At the launch of the watch today at Art Basel Miami, I had the opportunity to speak with Carlitos Cruz-Diez about his father’s legacy and the process of applying the concepts of Cruz-Diez’s lifelong color study to a Hublot timepiece. During the conversation, he pointed out that over the course of aiding in the creation of the watch, he learned that the watch community and art community come from totally different camps. The core appreciation for detail, craftsmanship, and emotion is certainly there with both communities, but the approach is entirely different. Collecting art has always been an emotional process, whereas the proliferation of watches as a hobby– and the community it brings – is relatively recent. Historically, aside from a number of small manufacturers, horology was treated as an industrial pursuit. The goal back then, for the most part, was to produce an accurate instrument rather than a piece of art. The Cruz-Diez watch occupies an unusual place, as the execution of the watch requires a certain reverence for the artist whose work laid the foundation for its execution, while also working within Hublot’s production and manufacturing limitations. But this particular Hublot certainly emphasizes the kinetic aspect of Cruz-Diez’s philosophy. Technically, the appearance of the dial changes every fraction of a second, although it isn't quite noticeable to the human eye. Over a few minutes it certainly is, however. Of course, there is a shortcut: Setting the time also sets in motion this optical illusion.

Hublot’s Big Bang Meca-10 features a skeletonized manufacture movement in a large case measuring 45 mm x 57 mm x 15.8 mm. The collection currently consists of versions made in titanium, King Gold, Full Magic gold, or ceramic, all of which have a black composite resin lower bezel and case flanks.

Driving the hours, minutes, small seconds, and dual power reserve indicators are Hublot’s 3Hz caliber HUB1201, which is made in-house and features a massive 10-day power reserve that needs to be wound by hand.

For this article, we photographed the Big Bang Meca-10 Titanium (Ref. 414.NI.1123.RX) and the Meca-10 Full Magic Gold (Ref. 414.MX.1138.RX).

The titanium version is lighter on the wrist, and on the pocket but the proprietary gold model has some unique elements that make a compelling argument in favor of precious metal, even if you’re the type who always prefers steel or titanium.

Full Magic Gold is marked as 18K gold but unlike other alloyed golds, which are typically 75% pure gold mixed with 25% of other alloys such as platinum, nickel, copper – Magic Gold’s 25% is made of ceramic boron carbide powder. The result: a scratch-resistant gold that is both certified as 18K by the Central Office for Precious Metals Control, and has a hardness rating of about 1,000 Vickers. For comparison, typically 18k gold of any color is 400 Vickers and most steel used in watches is 600 Vickers. Magic Gold is completely scratchproof, and it can only be scratched by a diamond.

Raw Magic Gold is yet to be machined and, because it is so hard, it can only be shaped by diamond-tipped tools, laser, and ultrasonic machining. In fact, to place the “18K” hallmark on the caseback, it must be done with a laser etching machine as traditional methods do not work.

One of the other key, and rarely mentioned, selling points of Magic Gold, is that it is extremely light for 18K gold. At 138 grams it weighs significantly less than a gold case of this size would normally be. Part of this is due to the fact that the bezel and case flanks are made from a lightweight resin material, and because the inner case is titanium, but still, it’s insanely light for 18K gold. The titanium version is only 14 grams lighter at 124 grams. For reference, a King Gold case, which does not have any ceramic mixed in, weighs a little over 170 grams. Normally the difference between gold (one of the heaviest watch case materials) and titanium (one of the lightest watch case materials) is far greater.

Additionally, Magic Gold has one more unique element: the surface has a sort of worn look that makes it appear almost like bronze, but without a chance of changing is color or forming a green patina.

Of course, if you like the look of titanium and want the lighter case, then that is a better option and will save you close to $15K. The entire case has been micro-blasted with beads resulting in a finish.

Uniquely, both watches feature two power reserve indications, allowing you to monitor the power reserve remaining by day (10 days), or view the warning indicator at 3 o’clock which turns red when there are only 2 days of power reserve remaining.

Another interesting feature is a rack and pinion system visible at 12 o’clock and which is animated when you wind the twin parallel mainspring barrels, which have a 240-hour maximum power reserve.

There are a variety of straps to choose from, and you basically have to use specific Hublot straps. The upside is that each strap uses a quick-release system where you simply push a button and pop the strap off, which is excellent.

The Monaco was a completely new collection for Heuer at the time, and though it was created more as a design-oriented watch than the Autavia and Carrera that came out alongside it, the watch became immortalized as a racing watch icon when the actor and "King of Cool" Steve McQueen selected it to use while filming Le Mans. The Monaco also bears the distinction of being one of the first square-shaped watches to have a waterproof case.

Exactly 50 years have passed since that initial launch, and most watch enthusiasts are aware of what happened next. Zenith, Seiko, and the Heuer-led coalition all released their version of the first automatic chronograph mere months apart. With the Quartz Crisis right around the corner, growth was unfortunately not in the cards for Heuer, who discontinued the Monaco in the 1970s, before reviving it in various limited-edition runs throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The biggest difference in function between the 1133B and the CAW211P is the movement inside. Despite sharing a name with the original calibre 11, the contemporary movement is based off a workhorse Sellita SW-300 that has a chronograph module courtesy of Dubois Dépraz, an authentic relationship that references the original consortium collaboration. The difference is noticeable through the dueling square registers, which include a running seconds display at three o'clock and a 30-minute totalizer at nine o'clock, compared to the 30-minute and 12-hour counters of the original watch.

During its lifetime, the Monaco has been many things. It helped break down the notion that square watches were only suitable as dress pieces, something many modern brands have Jack Heuer – and case supplier Ervin Piquerez – to thank for. It's a watch that is recognizable across the room, befitting its celebrity patronage. And it's a timepiece whose consistent design language remains one of a kind, 50 years later.

Rolex debuts Sky-Dweller In Stainless Seel

Rolex has announced six new “Rolesor” versions of the Sky-Dweller for 2017, which consist of 904L stainless steel cases with 18K yellow or white gold bezels (the bracelet center links on the yellow gold versions are crafted in 18K solid gold).

Previously the Sky-Dweller – which was introduced in 2012 – was only available in precious metal cases.

As with the previous versions, the Sky-Dweller comes in a 42 mm diameter case, is powered by Rolex’s most complicated automatic movement (caliber 9001), is protected by 11 patents, and features a unique combination of dual time zone and an annual calendar that is controlled by the patented rotating Ring Command bezel and crown.

“Setting the Sky-Dweller’s three main functions is quick and easy. It can be done in any order, and both forwards and backwards, without restriction. Each function is accessed using the rotatable Ring Command bezel and adjusted with the winding crown, which has only one setting position. The operation is as simple as 1-2-3.”

The most noteworthy changes to the Sky-Dweller are the redesigned dials that now feature rectangular hour indexes instead of Arabic or Roman numerals, as well as being filled with Chromalight luminescent material.

The watch is all about showing off and celebrating that new technology in a watch that also pays homage to TAG Heuer's history via the Carrera case and name.

This watch is very much an evolution of the Carrera Heuer 02T, a watch that shook up the industry in 2016 by offering a Swiss tourbillon chronograph at a never-before-heard-of price. Building off the foundation of that watch's 45mm case (rendered here in blacked-out titanium with a carbon bezel), TAG Heuer has pushed basically every aspect of the movement to the next level. The entire thing is decorated with hexagon motifs, a reference to the nanoscopic hexagonal structure of the carbon used in the hairspring, the dial and rotor have both been openworked to let you see more of the movement, and the aluminum balance wheel is set with both white gold weights and white Super-LumiNova so you can see it beating away in the dark. Neon green accents add further drama, adorning everything from the tourbillon cage to the column wheel.

In theory though, the use of carbon here is all about performance. According to TAG Heuer, the carbon-composite hairspring is virtually unaffected by both gravitational effects and shocks, makes perfect concentric oscillations due to its geometry, thus offering better precision, is easier to assemble for their watchmakers, and has outstanding thermal behavior when paired with the aluminum alloy balance. Initial Thoughts

I feel like I have a pretty good handle on how to evaluate a watch by now. I've been doing this professionally for a few years and know what things I should look for, the questions people are going to ask, and how to figure out relatively complex mechanisms on short notice in order to then explain them to others. What makes the Chiming Jump Hour different from conventional mechanical watches is that the energy from the balance is not directly transferred to the seconds hand. Instead, the energy is stored in a storage mechanism that releases it to the fourth wheel only when the eighth semi-oscillation takes place. In the same manner, the power stored during 60 seconds-interval is delivered to the minute hand instantaneously, and the same thing happens every 60 minutes, when the digital display jumps to the new hour.


Since the hour disk is heavier than an hour hand, and since it also engages a striking hammer for acoustic indication, this watch with three jumping indications requires more power to move, and demands a special new caliber that could not only accumulate the energy required for the jumping indications but would also coordinate the jumps of the seconds, minutes, and hours with great precision. The new three-patent manually wound caliber 32-650 HGS PS movement was therefore designed specifically for this model. It is built from 438 individual components and 75 jewels. The movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, and provides a minimum of 48 hours of power reserve (max. 53 hours). And it’s refreshing to see, even if the price point is insanely high and perhaps not attainable by the younger generation that it presumably targets – it at least offers a new direction and perspective. Besides, it’s a Patek, so if cared for correctly, it’ll likely maintain or increase in value over time.

The dial

Personally, I love the clean and easy to read design of the dial, the beautiful gray satin-brushed sunburst finish, and the simplistic 60-minute chronograph counter at 6 o’clock. By the way, the chronograph is of the more complicated flyback variety, meaning you can reset the chronograph while it’s still running, as opposed to needing to stop, reset, then restart – the way you have to with a conventional chronograph.

Driving the hours, minutes, date, and chronograph functions (60-minutes/60-seconds) is a 4Hz automatic, caliber CH 28-250 C, which is a flyback chronograph with a column-wheel and vertical clutch disc, the latter of which prevents a rebound of the seconds hand in either direction when the chronograph is started. Additionally, according to Patek “because the clutch is virtually friction-free, the chronograph hand can be used as a continuously running seconds hand.”

The movement

The movement measures 30 mm x 6.63 mm, is finished with circular Geneve stripes and circular graining, and has 13 bridges, 32 jewels, and 305 total components, including a 21K gold unidirectional oscillating weight. Maximum power reserve is 55-hours. Water-resistance is 120 meters. Each Aquanaut Chronograph comes with both black and orange rubber straps, fitted with signed steel folding clasps.

Overall Impression

Earlier this year, the Swiss watchmaking brand TAG Heuer has updated its famous Aquaracer line of relatively inexpensive diving watches with a number of new timepieces that feature scratch-proof bezel. While not replacing older models, they somehow manage to significantly refresh and expand the collection with just a couple of light brushes here and there effectively making it a lot more difficult to walk away from the store without blowing a major hole in your budget.

As I have already mentioned, this is just a minor, um, mid-cycle update, so don’t expect this refreshed model to offer much new in the looks department. Besides the obvious scratch-resistant, glossy ceramic bezel, the 2015 Aquaracer line now features slightly revised dial with new hours, minutes, and seconds hands, as well as some minor adjustment to smaller elements, like inscriptions and hour markers.

Still, on a more subjective note, I must admit that the face-lifted model looks a lot more interesting than the one that features a more, um, plain steel bezel. There seems to be more energy in it and it clearly projects a lot stronger mojo.

Case & Strap

The really good thing is that the watch still comes in two sizes: there is a smaller one -40.5 millimeters in diameter- that looks more unisex, and there is a larger one that still measures 43 millimeters and seems to be designed exclusively with men in mind.

Offering the same satin-finished body that is nicely accented with glossy black ceramic bezel, the new timekeeper still looks very tool-like, there is nothing ‘subtle’ about this deliberately rough model.

On the other hand (at least, when it comes to chronographs), wearing this thing with a business suit may prove problematic, especially if you are not a man of heroic proportions. It may just be too brutal for some.

Mechanism

The refreshed watch is still animated by the same Caliber 16 self-winding movement that the Swiss watchmaker seems to love so much. Based on the decades-old ETA 7750 chronograph movement (it was actually introduced back in 1974, but underwent a number of upgrades increasing, among other things, jewel count and leaving behind the slower sibling that was working at a rather archaic frequency of 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour,) the modified movement offers the level of robustness and accuracy that is at least on par with the base model.

No wonder that at this time TAG Heuer uses this mechanism to power its most best-selling products including some versions of their popular Carrera chronographs and, of course, the Aquaracer line.

Designed to be used with relatively inexpensive models, the mechanism features modest exterior finish, which is basically limited to polished screw-heads and a custom oscillating weight that features the usual Geneva stripes pattern and some minor open-working.

Well, given the fact that the mechanism is hidden from your eyes with a solid case back cover that features the usual engraving of an antique diving helmet, this doesn’t look like a serious problem to me. After all, this is a (rather expensive) tool watch.

Dial

As you can see on the photos, the 2015 model now features a magnifying lens on its sapphire dial (not sure about the way it is attached to its surface, I think they simply glued the lens on) and (finally!) has the thin white frame around the date window removed. The change in design not only increased the timekeeper’s legibility, but also allowed to make the dial a bit less busy: the rectangular frame really didn’t play well with the dial with its traditional deck-style horizontal pattern.

Visually, the hands and hour markers on the refreshed model seem a bit wider and there is seemingly more luminous substance applied to them so, if you plan to use the watch under water, its legibility in poor lighting conditions will hopefully will be better than that of the older watch. Also, the new parts simply make the new wristwatch bolder and more dynamic than before.

Pricing & Availability

The watch was presented last spring at Baselworld 2015 show and, right now, is available in most parts of the world, although you should probably check at your local authorized dealer whether the timekeeper is actually available in store.

As for the pricing, it is actually not as high as I feared it could have been. At this time, MSRP is $3650 for a version on steel bracelet (refs. CAY211B.BA0927 and CAY211A.BA0927, blue and black dials respectively) and $3500 for the ones on less practical leather strap. The “Full Black” model (ref. CAY218A.FC6361) that features something that looks like DLC-treated stainless steel body, “black gold” hand and hour markers, and rugged yet comfortable black textile strap with contrasting yellow stitching is significantly more expensive retailing for impressive $4050. Still (I hope guys from TAG Heuer won’t notice this advice), you can find one at major online retailers for at least 30 percent of list price.
